Título: Benthic Habitat Mapping of Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, Canada
Especie: Benthic Habitat Mapping
Descripción: Benthic habitat mapping is the process of marrying spatially continuous environmental data with point-wise ground-truthing samples to produce predictive maps of dominant benthic flora and fauna assemblages in a localized area. We can visualize these three steps mapping the west coast of Placentia Bay, Canada. To the left are drawings of common benthic species during ground-truthing, including the brown kelp Agarum clathratum, the snow crab Chionoecetes opilio, and the green sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis. The top right is a rendition of the processed bathymetric data collected using acoustic surveying, with research vessel tracklines outlining the survey plan. The bottom right shows the distribution of dominant species assemblages within the constraints of four survey areas.
