Descripción: Swamp snowdrop – Leucojum aestivalis includes 12 species of perennial plants that inhabit Central Europe and the Mediterranean. The natural habitats are wet, shady places and along rivers, as well as in moisterforests. The marsh snowdrop forms bulbs up to 3 cm in diameter. Blooms in April-May. The peduncles are slightly flattened, hollow. They reach up to 60 cm in height. They bear from 3 to 10 downward-pointing flowers. They are larger than those of the ordinary snowflake. The perianth consists of six equally long white petals, with a green spot at the tip. They are not fused, but overlap, forming a bell-shaped perigon. Among them are the stamens. Because of the nectar, bees visit the flowers en masse. From the stalks of the marsh snowdrop (Leucojum aestivum) the medicinal substance galantamine is extracted for the production of the drug Nivalin, which was used in the past to treat polio and is used in modern medicine to treat Alzheimer's and diseases of the nervous system.
