DESCRIPTION: The Eurasian nuthatch (Sitta europaea) is a small bird belonging to the Passeriformes order, Sittidae family. It's habitat consists of all the temperate mixed woodland parts of Asia and Europe. It's diet consists mostly of caterpillars and beetles, supplemented with nuts and seeds in the autumn and winter seasons. The nuthatch's legs have an unique form, well suited for climbing the vertical, soft surfaces of trees. This way the nuthatch can forage while climbing or descending trees head first. I once fed these birds by hand and was surprised of the strong grip of their claws. They were able to enfold my fingers.
In my illustration, I tried to exclusively depict the structure of their strong legs as well as the grace of these astonishing birds.
