DESCRIPTION: I've decided to make an illustration dedicated to the mantises. There is a belief in South Africa that the mantis is a god of the Khoi. In Greece 'mantis' means 'the prophet or seer'. The mantis are widely represented in culture: two martial arts in China are based on coping movements of the mantis. Also you can see references to the mantis in cinematography.
I've chosen various species to show their beauty and patterns. Also I've wanted to show different phases of their life. I used watercolors to paint a mantis with a child on its back, detailed picture of Empusa and an immature mantis. Malaysian Orchid Mantis also called Hymenopus coronatus is on the left of the picture. It has a special camouflage including pink and yellow colours which makes it look like an orchid.
The portrait of Empusa pennata is in the middle of the painting . It is a species of praying mantis in genus Empusa. It is found in European area: Spain, France, Italy, Greece. It has a great flying apparatus by pair of wings and a light body mass.
The third on the right shows immature Empusa Pennata.
