Odontocetes, in particular sperm whales, use a complex system to emit sound. Air (green in the picture) enters through the blowhole. Moving inside the nasal cavity, it goes through the phonic lips (the red organ in the drawing) producing clicks and buzzes, whose vibrations pass through the spermaceti organ (bluish in the picture) and through the melon (yellow), which shapes and directs the waves. When they hit an obstacle, they come back and are received by an organ localized under the whale's jaw, just as a sonar.
