The maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus), known in Brazil as "lobo guará", is the largest canid of South America. It is not really a wolf, nor it is closely related to other canids. It is the only species in its genus, Chrysocyon.
The average adult stands 90cm tall at the shoulder and it has large ears and long black legs. Its fur may be reddish brown to golden orange with a distinctive black mane and white fur at the tip of the tail and beneath the throat.
