Description:
The peony is a flowering plant - which includes so many different kinds and colors - in the genus Paeonia, the only genus in the family Paeoniaceae. The peony is named after Paeon, a student of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine and healing. Legend says that Asclepius became jealous of his pupil but Zeus saved Paeon from the wrath of Asclepius by turning him into the peony flower. In Feng shui Peony symbolize luck, love and faithfulness.
The technique used for this painting is watercolor, very suitable to draw a flower: layer by layer, exploring how color gets less and more intensive, causing a meditative effect to the eyes of the observer as if the peony itself grew again and again everytime somebody looks at it; enjoying its look and imagining its smell, feeling its beauty and its carachter, so tender and fragile.
In Russia there are lots of flower kiosks on streets, and it is a big tradition to buy them to express feelings through them. This painting wants to go a step further and transmit these feelings by art, able to break any time or space barrier, from Yekaterinburg to Barcelona, from Russia to Catalonia.
