The image depicts the unsociable nocturnal Boreal owl from the Strigidae family. Its genus is Aegolius funereus and it could be found mainly in Scandinavia.
Due to its shyness, this small owl specie is a nocturnal bird but the short span of the night during summer in Scandinavia forces it to hunt in the daytime as well.
The artistic interpretation aims to represent its character with its evasive reaction to human. The image leaves a trace of a mystery since it seems like the owl has found itself faced by human presence while looking for some warmth in the cold Nordic winter next to a typical cottage house on a Finnish island.
The drawing is mainly elaborated in pencil, with some hints of acrylic colour to help the better understanding of the features of the bird with its surprised facial expression, wide yellow eyes and beautiful white colouring spots on the feathers. The image is digitally post-producted in order to give some colour on the background and emphasize on the "what is behind the picture" effect.
Mixed media: pencil, acrylic paint on recycled paper. Digital editing of the background.
