Tree bark consist of:
1 – cork – is an external, secondary tissue that is impermeable to water and gases, and is also called the phellem.
2 – cork cambium – meristem that gives rise to periderm.
3 – alburnum – the soft, newer wood in the trunk of a tree found between the bark and the hardened heartwood.
4 – sapwood – the newly created xylem. It transports water and minerals from the roots to the upper parts of the tree.
5 – Heartwood – is wood that as a result of a naturally occurring chemical transformation has become more resistant to decay.
Girdling is the complete removal of a strip of bark from around the entire circumference of either a branch or trunk of a woody plant.The tree rings will be thicker on the side to the north(6) and thinner on the southern(7) side.
