Green Bottle Fly
Species or element:
Lucilia sericata
Description:
The green bottle fly (Lucilia sericata) is a species of Calliphoridae or blow fly. The green bottle fly is similar to our house fly with a brilliant metallic green or copper green color. The compound eyes are red brown, the wings have a clear appearance and the legs and antennae are black. The characteristics of the green bottle fly are three bristles on the dorsal mesothorax. This body region is located on the middle of the back.
The green bottle fly is mainly found in the Northern Hemisphere like the United States and Canada but also in most other areas of the world.
Lucilia sericata plays an important role in forensic, medical and veterinary science. They are often the first insects appearing on an animal or human carcass. The larvae are useful to determine the exact time of death.
