Chasteberries are a native of the Mediterranean region. It is one of the few temperate-zone species of Vitex, which is on the whole a genus of tropical and sub-tropical flowering plants.Flavonoids (vitexin, casticin), iridoid glycoside (agnuside, aucubin), p-hydroxybenzoic acid,alkaloids, essential oils, fatty oils, diterpenoids and steroidal hormone precursors have been identified in the chemical analysis of Vitex agnus-castus. They occur in the fruits and in the leaves.Also from ancient terms until now this plant has been using in medical use.Clinical studies have demonstrated effectiveness of standardised and controlled medications produced from extract of the plant in the management of premenstrual stress syndrome (PMS), and currently using in various gynecological problems.
