Anatomy of the Common Starfish (Asterias rubens)

Species or element:
Common Starfish (Asterias rubens)

Description:
This anatomical illustration of the Common Starfish was part of the curriculum of the Master Scientific Illustration in the Netherlands. It is based on the dissection of an actual fixated specimen and photographs of living animals. The water wascular system, including the ambulacral feet, are depicted in blue. The animal is shown from its aboral surface in a natural position, with the opening of the mouth lying on the substrate.
Note to the jury: This illustration has won the first price of the AEIMS (Association Européenne des Illustrateurs Médicaux et Scientifiques) award in the category "student" and was published in the May 2017 edition of the Dutch National Geographic. I hope that this does not disqualify it from participating here. I still own all the rights to the image.
