Work in progress Mullus surmuletus - Inês Lira

Inês Lira

This illustration represents Mullus surmuletus, commonly know as striped red mullet.
I began by deeply studying the fish itself, making notes of all the information I could get. Counting rays, taking measurements.
After this study I organized all my annotations. Understood how the fins are placed as well as how to represent them in drawing. The final result of this long process was the base of my drawing.
Studied light values and made several drafts before I jumped into the final piece. With this done I began working on my polyester paper with graphite pencils, as well as a range of mechanical pencils and erasers.
This was a very interesting, exciting and enlightening piece for me to do.
