Description:
Abyssinian roller (Coracias abyssinicus)
The Abyssinian roller is a part of the roller bird family which can be found across the Sahel belt in Africa, south of the Sahara, where it hunts large insects and small rodents, taking advantage of smoke from forest fires which disturbs invertebrates. Both sexes of the Abyssinian roller have similar mostly blue plumage with brilliant blue wing tips, warm brown backs and yellow-brown heads. Adult rollers also have long dark tail streamers which aid their flight performance. Abyssinian rollers will dive and roll at intruders, including human, and their twisting and turning flight gave this family of birds the name rollers.
