Title:
Red panda
Specie:
Ailurus fulgens – from Ailuridae family.
Description:
The designation "panda" comes from the nepalese/tibetan word "ponya". Has a characteristic reddish-brown coloration, rounded head, short muzzle and large ears; black belly and long fluffy tail. His wobbly gait is due to the size of short front limbs, being slightly larger than a domestic cat. It also has semi-retractable claws and features a "false thumb". An adult measures between 510-635mm and weighs 3-6Kg. It is a solitary animal, with nocturnal crepuscular habits. Rarely interacts with partners outside the mating season or in family groups. Their food is mainly composed of bamboo; it can also ingest eggs, birds, insects and small mammals. It is native to the Himalayan and southern regions of China. It is currently in danger of extinction (less than 10,000).
