The long tails can trick bats that they are larger than what they truly are and allow them to escape when bat attack their tails instead of the body. The appearance changes drastically in the three stages of instar but still remain hairy. After each shredding of skin, the colours of the body will change. From black to red-orange brown and finally to green with white stripes and metallic reflective marks. The instar feeds on pine trees and spins brownish cocoon on pine needles or ground.
