Título: More Than Jaws
Especie: Great White Shark
Descripción: Throughout its evolutionary history, the Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias) (fig. 1/1a) has developed specialized adaptations that have made it one of the most successful & widely distributed predators of the last 60 million years. The aqua-dynamic skin of this lamniform shark is covered with dermal denticles (fig. 2) – tiny tooth-like scales that reduce drag, allowing them to maneuver through the water with torpedo-like stealth. Additionally, this predatory fish – the largest on Earth- relies upon an internal mechanism found in its nose to detect & hone in on potential prey. Known as the Ampullae of Lorenzini (fig. 3), this intricate network of vesicles & electoreceptive neuromasts detects trace amounts of electricity generated by the contracting of muscles.
