Título: Surmullets of the Mediterranean Sea
Especie: Mullus barbatus, Mullus surmuletus

Descripción: The red mullet (Mullus barbatus, upper illustration) and the striped red mullet (Mullus surmuletus, lower illustration) are two species of goatfish (family Mullidae) that live in the Mediterranean sea. Both species commonly occur on soft sandy or muddy substrates near Spanish coast. They use barbels below their mouths to find small benthic crustaceans, worms and mollusks.
M. barbatus is generally rose coloured with possible brighter large irregular spots over the body but without prominent stripes alongside. Also it has a steeper, more vertical head. M. surmuletus has much more visible stripes, in particular a darker red one running along the lateral line and stripe marks on the first dorsal fin. Its head is longer.
