Typically found in open woodland on moist calcareous soils Cypripedium calceolus is the largest orchid species in Europe. up to 60 cm hight with flowers of a up to 10 cm. Flowers usually occur towards end of spring and bloom June to September. Fowerstructure has adapted to its special pollination mechanism. Lady's slipper doesn't secrete nectar or any other material that a pollinator can eat. Lady's slipper's undeniables attraction is its pleasant fragrance, which is partly the same as burrowing bees' pheromones. Cypripedium (Greek Kupris pedion), means Venus' foot like the Roman goddess venus. Calceolus is the Latin wordfor a small shoe.
