Description: The body coloration of the brook trout exhibits an amazing display of colors, making them clearly distinct from all of its relatives. Brook trout can be easily distinguished by the wavy lines (vermiculations) occurring on the upper part of the body, the white edges of the paired fins and the red spots surrounded by a blue halo. In general, the intensity of the colors can be variable, depending on the environmental conditions, but usually during spawning the colors are more intense and the lower flank of males turns into a marked vibrant red. This characteristic bright coloration is among the most striking secondary sexual traits of salmonid males.
