Title: Almond
Specie: Prunus Dulcis
Description: The almond is a deciduous tree originating in the Middle East. Though for me, it's fascination and beauty comes from my family's farm in the Western Cape of South Africa where my parents grow 5 varieties.
The trees enjoy the hot, dry summers and mild winters of this special micro-climate where they flower in early spring (September/October) and are ready for harvest in midsummer (February/March).
The flowers are white to pale pink and their transformation into a drupe requires insects to cross-pollinate between the different varieties. The nut is encapsulated by a hard shell within the green/grey fleshy drupe which, as it matures, changes colour, splits and separates from the shell.
