Title: Floating in the Deep
Specie: Giant Pacific Octopus

Description: The Giant Pacific Octopus, Enteroctopus dofleini, is the largest octopus species and resides in the cold, oxygen rich waters of the North Pacific Ocean. They have three hearts and blue blood thanks to a copper-rich protein in the bloodstream, which is efficient for oxygen transport in cold environments. The octopus is equipped with special pigment cells, called chromatophores, just below the surface of the skin that allow it to change colour and blend in with coral-laden surroundings. This is particularly useful as, despite technically being a mollusc, they have very little protective armour. Giant Pacific octopuses can grow to 9 m wide from the tip of one arm to another, and they have approx. 2,140 suction cups on their arms, giving them a powerful grip and sense of taste and smell.
