Description: Deraniyagala's beaked whale (Mesoplodon hotaula) is a species of mesoplodont whale first recognised by Paules Edward Pieris Deraniyagala in 1963. Like several other species of beaked whales, Deraniyagala's beaked whale is known only from stranded individuals. However, these whales (female on top and male on bottom) painted and referenced the living Deraniyagala's beaked whales observed in the South China Sea by Chinese scientists. Observation results show that the white spots on their bodies are the wounds left after their fighting.
