Title: The Domestic Silk Moth - Domestic silk moth (bombyx mori), Bombycidae family

Description: The domestic silk moth ( Bombyx mori ) is an insect from the moth family Bombycidae. The silkworm is the caterpillar of a silk moth, and is the primary producer of silk. The larvae feed on mulberry leaves to grow in size and secrete a kind of fibrous protein which hardens into a cocoon of silk. Native to China, they specifically feed on white mulberry leaves, but also eat Osage oranges and lettuce. Unfortunately, the silk moths had lost their ability to fly due to selective breeding from being domesticated since millenniums ago. This illustration shows the beauty of the Bombyx mori, from its tiny length of 4 cm long, bulging pitch black eyes, horned tails, their buff-colored coat with thin brown lines, and their butterfly-like wings.
