Description: The European Mantis (Mantis religiosa) is a voracious carnivore insect that belongs to the Mantidae family. It lives in the temperate zones of Europe, Asia, and North America and is green or brown to blend in with the vegetation and ambush its prey. This species is often called "praying mantis" because its forelegs resemble a human's praying position when ready to hunt (1). When the insect sights its prey, it lashes out with its raptorial forelegs and captures the target, which it then secures with the spines and spurs (2a) running along the femur (2b) and tibia (2c) of the leg. Mantises are the only invertebrates with stereopsis and the only insect that can turn their head around 180 degrees. They can find any prey moving thanks to two big compound eyes (3a) containing 10,000 hexagonal ommatidia (3b) and three ocelli (3c) located in the middle of the head and used to detect light.

La mantis europea (Mantis religiosa) es un insecto carnívoro voraz de la familia Mantidae. Vive en las zonas templadas de Europa, Asia y América del Norte y es de color verde o marrón para mezclarse con la vegetación y emboscar a sus presas. Se la conoce como "mantis religiosa" porque sus patas delanteras se asemejan a la posición de oración de un humano cuando está listo para cazar (1). Cuando el insecto ve a su presa, ataca con sus patas delanteras rapaces y captura al objetivo y lo asegura con las espinas y espuelas (2a) que recorren el fémur (2b) y la tibia (2c) de la pata. Las mantis son los únicos invertebrados con estereopsis y el único insecto que puede girar la cabeza 180 grados. Pueden ver cualquier presa en movimiento gracias a dos grandes ojos compuestos (3a) que contienen 10.000 omatidios hexagonales (3b) y tres ocelos (3c) ubicados en el medio de la cabeza y que se utilizan para detectar la luz.
