Descripción: Cardiac muscle tissue consists of cardiomyocytes. Each cardiomyocyte contains 1-2 nuclei (1), which are surrounded by myofibrils (2). The junctions of cardiomyocytes are called intercalated discs (3.a, 3.b). Gap junctions (4) provide ion exchange and signal transmission between neighboring cardiomyocytes for their synchronous contraction. Sarcolemma (5) is a thin membrane covering the cardiomyocyte. T-tubules (6) form a network, their main function is to conduct excitatory impulses, which leads to the release of calcium ions from the sarcoplasmic reticulum (7), which are necessary for muscle fiber contraction. Cardiomyocytes contain a large number of mitochondria (8). This ensures that the cells receive enough energy to keep the heartbeat going.
