Descripción: (EN)Bucorvus Leadbeateri is found solely in the southern parts of Africa. This large bird (90-129 cm long and weighing up to 6 kg) lives in groups of 5-10 individuals and builds its nests in deep trees' cavities and rock holes on cliffs. It feeds on insects and small vertebrates and it can reach a very long lifespan of 50-60 years and even 70 if kept in captivity. Unfortunately, its slow reproductive rates, 1-3 eggs every 3 years, its aggressive behaviour, destruction of its natural habitat and cultural beliefs brought us almost to the point of its extinction. It was classified as one of the endangered species in Africa and we should bring attention to its protection. This fact together with its mysterious appearance convinced me to illustrate this bird. Its black feathers, curved black beak and red throat plus a penetrating sight stole my attention during my trip to Mauritius.
(ES)Bucorvus Leadbeateri se encuentra únicamente en las partes meridionales de África. Esta ave de gran tamaño (90-129 cm de largo y hasta 6 kg de peso) vive en grupos de 5-10 individuos y construye sus nidos en profundas cavidades de los árboles y agujeros de roca en los acantilados. Se alimenta de insectos y pequeños vertebrados y puede alcanzar una vida muy larga de 50-60 años o 70 si se mantiene en cautiverio. Desafortunadamente, sus lentos ritmos reproductivos, 1-3 huevos cada 3 años, su comportamiento agresivo, la destrucción de su hábitat natural y las creencias culturales nos llevaron casi al punto de su extinción. Fue clasificada como una de las especies en peligro de extinción en África y debemos llamar la atención sobre su protección. Este hecho, junto con su misteriosa apariencia, me convenció para ilustrar esta ave. Sus plumas negras, su pico negro curvado y su garganta roja, además de una vista penetrante, me robaron la atención durante mi viaje a Mauricio.
