Macrocystis pyrifera is a large, fast-growing brown alga inhabiting cold, nutrient-rich temperate waters, typically below 21 °C, where it anchors to rocky substrates. Reaching up to 50 m in height, it possesses irregular stipes with gas-filled pneumatocysts that confer buoyancy and stability. This species forms dense kelp forests of remarkable productivity and biodiversity, providing essential habitat, food resources, and ecological support for numerous fish and invertebrate species.
Macrocystis pyrifera es un alga parda de gran tamaño y rápido crecimiento que habita en aguas templadas frías y ricas en nutrientes, generalmente por debajo de los 21 °C, donde se fija a sustratos rocosos. Puede alcanzar hasta 50 m de altura y presenta estipes irregulares con neumatocistos llenos de gas que le proporcionan flotabilidad y estabilidad. Forma densos bosques de kelp de alta productividad y biodiversidad, esenciales como hábitat y fuente de alimento para numerosas especies marinas.
I have always been fascinated by the marine world, so I took the opportunity to explore it through illustration. The aim is to showcase its beauty and remarkable biodiversity.
My research focused specifically on the movement of algae. I aimed to capture its beautiful, flowing dance in the water and its interactions with other species. I studied the biodiversity of kelp forests alongside biologists, then translated their scientific approach into a more artistic one, with a strong emphasis on composition. Particular attention was also given to the balance of colours.
