ENGLISH:
My illustration represents a metallic wood-boring beetle (Family: Buprestidae). These insects are also called jewel beetles because of their bright metallic colors like blue, green and purple. The name of the beetle comes from this process of a larva boring a tunnel in the bark (phloem) of a tree which is shown in my illustration.

SPANISH:
Mi ilustración representa un escarabajo barrenador metálico (familia: Buprestidae). Estos insectos también se llaman escarabajos joyas por su colores brillantes metálicos como azul, verde y violeta. El nombre del escarabajo viene del proceso de una larva horadando un túnel en la corteza (floema) de un árbol, que es demostrado en mi ilustración.

ENGLISH:
This illustration is part of my university research project for the National Museum of Natural History in Sofia, Bulgaria and this species is part of their collection. The main purpose is to explain a process which can't be easily spotted. I think this kind of visual language speaks to the people no matter what their occupation is. This process is presented by the illustrative diagram of a larvae boring a tunnel in a tree bark. Other additional purposes are to put emphasis on the bright colors of the beetle, and to show the insect's real dimensions.

Esta ilustración es parte de mi proyecto de investigación universitario para el Museo Nacional de Historia Natural en Sofía, Bulgaria. El objetivo principal es explicar un proceso que no se puede avisar fácilmente. Pienso que este tipo de lenguaje visual habla a la gente no importa cual sea su ocupación. Este proceso es presentado con la diagrama ilustrativa de una larva horadando un túnel en la corteza de un árbol. Los fines suplementarios son de subrayar los colores brillantes del escarabajo y de mostrar las dimensiones reales del insecto.

ENGLISH:
The illustration is made with traditional materials – acrylic markers, colored pencils and ink. The insect and the tree are with more details and realistic colors and textures but the larva is the opposite – a graphic illustration which shows only the form. After that, the separate illustrations of the different components are scanned and organized in an A4 Adobe Illustrator document with a light background. The figures (arrows and numbers) which are an important part of the illustrative diagram and clearly explain the shown biological process are added additionally.

La ilustración ha sido creada con materiales tradicionales – rotuladores acrílicos, lápices de colores y tinta. El insecto y el árbol son más detallados y colores y texturas realísticos pero el larva es, inversamente, una ilustración gráfica que enseña solamente la forma. Después, las ilustraciones independientes de las partes diferentes han sido escaneadas y organizadas en un documento A4 en Adobe Illustrator son un fondo blanco. Los signos (flechas y cifras), que son una parte importante de la diagrama ilustrativa y explican claramente el proceso biológico demostrado, han sido añadidos adicionalmente.
